My Friend Tonia is in town and we decided to hit every spot I have scouted Downtown over the past two years. I picked her up at 6:30am headed to my house which was base camp for the day. We would grab a couple outfits and head out to my spots. I shot instant film all day, not one frame of digital. After eleven hours we ended up with eighty seven amazing images.

A great little fixer-uper I past by on my way home from Colorful Colorado. I had an Ansel Adams Moonrise moment to get this shot. I saw the house and had my girlfriend pull a precision driving move to park near. I bolted away from the car with my tripod and had about seven minutes to compose, focus, and expose a bracketed sequence for my hdr process. I took my last couple shots as the sun was diving behind the mountains killing all the light I had. It just goes to show you if you see a shot, take it. You never know when you will get it back.

2nd Annual Big French Thanksgiving Day Turkey Shoot

Thanksgiving is a special day for my friends and I. Last year we started a tradition of taking our guns to the desert to shoot cheap frozen turkeys before we stuff our faces. This year T.B. found some awesome explosive powder. Let me tell you how fast you can cook a turkey when it is stuffed with that. Let's just say the buzzards wont have to shred the turkey meat themselves, it's pre-shredded. I took one of the Land Cameras I just recently bought at a swap meet for five bucks, loaded it up with Fuji film and blasted some great shots. The one below of T.B. might just be the best black and white photo I have ever taken. That Land Camera might be the best five bucks I have ever spent. I guess I am thankful for swap meets and instant film. Happy Holidays

International Guest Blogger: Kelly Marie Fitzpatrick

I haven't had a guest blogger in awhile so I thought this week would be a great time to get back into it. The guest blogger is my very close friend Kelly Marie Fitzpatrick. I met Kelly in classes at the College of Southern Nevada. After having a few classes together with her we became fast friends. Kelly is one of the photographers I collaborate with the most. We work together on at least two projects a month. Usually we are working portrait shoots that she organizes like an amazing field general. Vegas is a hot pin up town and Kelly has found herself immersed in that world. She thinks of big concepts and puts together an amazing team to pull off some amazing shots for the lack of budget that goes into them. I get to run a lot of the lighting for her and I truly enjoy it. With Kelly shooting and working with the model I can concentrate on the pattern and quality she is seeking. Together we get some great results. I haven't hung out with Kelly in a couple weeks. She is roaming Germany with her mom, brother, and friend that lives there. The shot above is hers, taken at Neuschwanstein Castle. If it looks familiar it should. It is the real live castle that Disney used for inspiration for Cinderella's castle in the 1950 classic. It's just one of the many beautiful places she has experienced there. I can't wait for her to get home. I'm sure we will hunker down behind her laptop and look at tons of beautiful images. Images I would love to share with you. I will post some more of her shots when she gets back and has time to edit and get settled. In the meantime enjoy this shot. Billy is a friend of mine. His role is one of Producer. If you could explain his job in a few words; Billy gets shit done. He doesn't mess around. If you can help him great. If you can't, get the hell out of his way. He has shit to do. It's nothing personal, it's efficiency. He doesn't have time to contemplate the finer aspects of skinny jeans. Billy is three dimensional. At any given moment he is on the phone with five different people. He has to be able to understand people and be understood. He uses technology to his advantage. Rotary phones are cute but you won't see Billy slowing himself down with one. He can make ten different things happen with five different people by the time you dial 702. Don't get me wrong though, Billy does love the finer things in life. Like the graceful dancing lines of a '56 Cadillac, or the symphony of twelve hand crafted cylinders of Ferrari glory. Objects of man's timeless obsessions. Objects Billy uses as inspiration. Inspiration to get shit done.

Fade To Black

Lately I have been in a destructive mood. That's why I think it's time to share a project I have been working on for quite some time. It's called Paper Hats, Polaroid, and Profoto. I don't want to give away too much more but I am leaving a taste of what the film looks like. The shot above is from Brian Head, Utah. I went snowboarding with some friends and did some testing with this film stock. The emulsion fades as soon as you take the photo. You can stop the fading process by ripping the acetate away from the developing layer, resulting in a fixed exposure and a clear transparency. I like the excitement of watching the print fade wondering if I should wait a couple more seconds or tear it apart as fast as I can because I like what I see. The process is the fun part. Sometimes with digital we forget to get absorbed in the process. If I could offer any advice I would say pick a project that slows you down. You never know you just might get a great idea waiting for the developer.

Sexy Rick Rides Again

I love working for my friends. They always have the greatest ideas. So I wasn't surprised when my fellow photographer and tattoo artist, Sexy Rick Reffner, came to me and said, " I want to be a cowboy." After a bit of explanation I learned that Rick wanted to get new business cards and he would like yours truly to take the photos. I loved the idea. We did some brainstorming and tons of shopping looking for the right shirt. It was a blast going through all the western wear shops in town. The best was the reaction of the clerks that worked there. Some were into it and helped us look for a shirt and some just looked at us like we were crazy. It was a hoot! My girlfriend and I made the hobby horse. It was kind of amazing the crap we made it out of. The list goes like this, mop handle, two pre-made pedestal for wheels, an old shirt for the head, and string for the mane. With an added tattoo machine (IT'S A MACHINE NOT A GUN) we were ready to shoot. The shot above was Rick being silly at one point. It reminded me of the cowboy that welcomes you to downtown Vegas. We shot a few of this set, then we did a mugshot set up. Karla Joy did Rick's makeup for the the mugshot and let me tell you he looked like he got rolled by The Las Vegas Club security boys. A facebook photo proved how real it looked by comments replied. I had a blast and now Sexy Rick owes me big time. So make sure you go visit him so he can save up to pay the invoice. Dr. Sketchy's

I love photography and I love to photograph. But sometimes I like to get out of the photo world and find inspiration from other mediums. Dr Sketchy's is perfect for this. It's a live figure drawing class held once a month at our local bar Dino's. Hosted by Las Vegas' own burlesque superstar Cha Cha Velour, it is a great time to meet artists and be creative in a social and relaxed setting. I usually draw but the other night I decided to shoot some Polaroid. The film stock I was shooting was old and not exposing properly so I starting drawing on the surface of the print. It felt constructive and destructive at the same time. A feeling one can only achieve at Dr. Sketchy's.

If you haven't heard, I am starting a new long term project called January Birthday. My friend, T.B. Lussier and I are restoring a 1954 Chevy panel truck to travel roadside America and document what we see and hear. Recently I traveled to Boulder City to work on a school assignment and scout locations for the January Birthday project. I ate at Mel's Diner and found what I am looking for in my project. As I was sitting at the lunch counter I felt an energy I have been seeking. It was the smile of the waitress and the smell of the food that tripped a circuit in my brain. I could feel what it might be like to drive to a place I have never been and stumble into wonder. I could feel the inspiration build as I ate my breakfast. I can't wait to get on the road.

Stay Out Of The Deep End

I've recently fallen in with a bad crowd. I've joined a bike gang called Hammer & Cycle. We like to ride the streets of Vegas and cause mayhem. My fellow photographer Sexy Rick is to blame . He joined first then invited me on a ride one night. My girlfriend and I were hooked immediately. We try to make it to every ride and event now. This past Saturday Hammer & Cycle had its Spring Nationals. We all met up at Sunset Park and had all kinds of races. Did I mention that we all ride cruisers, low riders, and choppers? Let me tell you a drag race with dropped stretched bikes is pretty awesome to watch. Spring Nationals was a great sucess. After the park some of us went to Amanda's house for a nice little after party. Her house is amazing and lucky for us the pool was empty. Being a bike gang we had to sweep the pool and see if someone would ride it. Maybe it was all the PBR throughout the day, there was no shortage of volunteers. While shooting riders I looked up at the crowd gathered around watching the fun and saw this awesome group shot. It's a small slice of the Hammer & Cycle crew. If you see us on the road give us space. Slowly but surely we are taking over the Vegas streets.

Lately my life has been challenging to say the least. I am in my final few semesters at school, the economy is bad here in Vegas, and the cherry on the sundae was my brand new laptop was stolen. I didn't lose any data but I haven't been able to shoot much digital. I have been working on my advertising class and shooting tons of Polaroid on the streets.I felt I needed to update this blog though. Here are a couple shots I've done for my class. I usually don't post class stuff but I don't have anything else. Hope you enjoy.

The art deco masterpiece is from the town of Shamrock in Texas. These are the types of places I will be documenting in my upcoming project about rural America. Stay tuned for more details.

O, The Weather Outside is Weather.....

Don't you love the friends that will do anything for you? I have a few go-to guys that I keep on the back burner for those special projects. I had a class where I had to do a weather assignment. I instantly got the idea to play on the world of the sun. I figured since I lived in Las Vegas it's an easy shoot. We have sunshine 360 days of the year right??? Well I decided to shoot this shot on one of those five days of rain. It was overcast and drizzling the whole day. I had to wrap my lights up in plastic and stick it out in the rain to get this shot. I was amazed how easy my lights made daylight. Mitch pictured here was amazing to work with. I have so many out takes and my cheeks hurt by the end of the shoot he was so funny. I will have to post some of those later. All I can say is there was a chicken and a shovel involved. Hope you like the post. More to come tomorrow.

Takin' It To The Streets!

I like to head down to Las Vegas Blvd with my cameras and friends to unwind and see whats happening on the streets. We usually hit Fremont or LVB. I love these spots because there are always new tourists with the same crazy faces scattered among the crowd. My favorite subjects are the people that live on the street. They usually have a great story or are just so crazy they become a story. These folks are true to life. The guy in the first image was just chilling in a construction walkway at City Center. He was drawing the best eagle I've seen drawn on the back of a pizza box with a ball point pen. I had to stop and chat with him. He didn't have much to say except that he loved to draw so when he found a pen and hunk of something, he just drew. The second guy was so happy he was, " Only twelve dollars away from a room!" I snapped his picture and gave him a couple dollars to put him a little closer to his room. The third shot here is something I see a lot living in Las Vegas. A dad is pictured here with his daughter and son watching the girls dance inside the casino. Probably not the best way to spend time with your kids on the family vacation. All these people were found within a square mile of each other. Probably the main reason I love shooting in Las Vegas.

Blue Powder Days!!

Sometimes you have to get away. You have to drive far and wide to see some new things and experience the wonderful world around you. Some friends and I went to Brian Head, Utah for the weekend. We were blessed by the powder gods with blue skies and deep fluffy powder. Three days away from cell phones and email in a beautiful cabin resting on the slopes recharged my batteries. We rode a lot those three days and even built a jump next to the cabin. You can see my friends in action in the photos above. Klye Fitzpatrick (top), Matt Mcnulty (middle), and Jordan Villasenior (bottom) seen here in the photos, rock the jump. The time flew by and it seemed like Sunday came to quick but the trip was one for the record books. I don't know if I'll ever have a better ski trip.

Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures

Have you ever been in an area that is unfamiliar but you needed desperate help? Sometimes these places are void of people to help. When you are in these places you are on your own. These are the times when our survival skills are tested. We can either cower inside ourselves or muster up and face the challenge. Can you walk down that dark alley to get to that service station pay phone? Will you put up your car title for money to pay the light bill? Are you going to go down to the Bail Bonds, pay the money to get your cousin out of jail at three am? This is the time to decide. Now is the moment when you will know what you are made of.

Solo Kicks Down 66

This last semester I took a night photography class. It was an advanced class so it was a lot of field shooting. One of the trips I planned was to the Salton Sea in southern California. We planned to go during a nice moon to get some nice moonlit landscapes with the mannequin I had just acquired. It was over the Thanksgiving break so we had plenty of time. As break grew nearer less and less people were able to make the trip. It was like an Agatha Christie novel. With a stubborn spirit I decided to make the trek alone. I loaded my mannequin, Harold, in the car and headed south on Hwy 95. I caught I40 west and decided to scout some spots on old Route 66. The old highway runs pretty much parallel with 40 for a long way. It was nice to have the total free time to stop when ever I wanted. As I worked my way southwest I went through Twenty Nine Palms. I was photographing a boat when Dan came up to me asking what I was up to. You have to love a neighbor looking out for one another. After we talked some photo talk, Dan figured out I was semi-harmless. I spent the next hour talking with Dan as he led me through his property scattered with old cars, military vehicles, and other assorted implements of destruction. A wonderful detour that I might not have gotten otherwise. I piled back in the car and bombed through Joshua Tree Forrest, Mecca then the Sea. Since I was shooting night stuff I went and scouted for a long time. Long enough to arrive to the spot I wanted to shoot with storm clouds in the sky. My moonlit landscape idea was toast and the wind was too crazy, even with a tripod. So I called it a night and grabbed a room at a motel. I woke up the next morning to rain. With one more night scheduled in Salton I decided to pack it in and admit defeat. Just for kicks I committed myself to take the Old Highway the whole way home, or as much of it as I could. The choice was a great one. For the next twelve hours I chased the clouds that the previous night ruined my moonlit landscape. After the storm the clouds had reduced in size and were perfect for scenic skies. I took some of my favorite shots I've ever shot on that trip and nothing went to plan. The trip was surprising and full of American wonder. I'm glad nothing worked out.

For the last couple months I have been with out a computer to edit my images on. Well my dark days are over, I finally bought a new laptop that is a data crunching machine. For the next couple days I will be posting some work that I shot over the past semester. Also I am going to throw in some Polaroids I've been working on. I will space it out so it's not a ton of crap thrown down at your feet. To start the flood of images I present a test shot from one of my Polaroid shoots. This is a digital test shot. This post is the lesson of luck. I was lucky enough to have a friend that asked me to assist him on a editorial photo assignment. My payment for the shoot was access to a 1950's Chevy Bel Air, a 1930's Hudson, and this beautiful Roaring Twenty's Willys coupe. The deal was, help with the model shoot and I get to shoot the prop cars in between set ups. The shoot went as smooth as I've seen. We had a two lane highway blocked off for one shot that was a drag race scene. The whole time we were setting up, people we driving by in big trucks with quads and dirt bikes in the back headed to Sandy Valley. When the light and models were ready we set our cars and had two different fifteen segments free of traffic. It was weird since Murphy's Law insists on there being heavy traffic if you are shooting anywhere near a road. The smoothness of the shoot even continued when we did a shot in the middle of town. Over all it was a few hours of extremely good luck.

After I got home and started editing my images the bad luck monsoon arrived. Mona comes from the living room and says, " I think there's something wrong with the laptop...." I went to the living room to see my laptop doing it's impression of the guy from Alien that has the creature burst out of his stomach. It was loaded with spyware. I just shut it off and took out the battery. This made me upset that we were down a laptop but I wasn't that worried because I could still edit on my desktop. The next morning my desktop hung itself with my belt in the middle of the night. I don't know what I did to my machines to make them want to die. I always told them I loved them. All I can do is hope and pray that they make it to the big server room in the sky. So remember when you get that really good dose of good luck watch out for the bad luck lurking in the midtones to ruin your day.

I get a lot of friends and different people giving me tips and locations on different cars and trucks that they have seen. It's almost as if I have a crew of scouts scanning the horizons looking for unique autos. I have to tell you most of the time the car is gone when I get there or it's just not a good shot. I try to get to every location my friends tell me about. It's funny that certain names and models get my interest more than others. This was true when my friend Kelly told me about a Willy's Pick Up not far from her house that was for sale. All I heard was Willy's and we were headed to the location. I never would of snapped this shot if Kelly hadn't scouted it for me. Thanks Kelly!

Sometimes you forget how cool your parents can be during the course of your life. The other day I had this little 4x4.5 inch Polaroid to remind me thankfully. I was walking through my kitchen when I noticed this photo on the counter. It stopped me in my tracks because I hadn't seen it for years. It's a shot of my mom and me about 15 minutes before I left home to move to Colorado. I was about 18 or 19 years old and it was the first time I left home to live far away. Two days before this shot was taken my three friends and I decided to go to Summit County and work at Keystone Mountain for the winter. It was last minute planning at it's best. Out of the four guys going the only car we had was a little four door Geo Metro. Let's just say essentials were the only thing packed. My mom never questioned the thought of making me stay. She did everything in her power to make sure that I was prepared for the whole trip. She even repacked our car so we could take all of the crap we wanted to take. It was weird leaving home for the first time. The further we drove from home the more it felt like an adventure. We got to Summit County. Two of us ended up getting jobs. Two didn't. Let me tell you that was a rough call to my mom. "Can you come get me?" Five of the hardest words to ever get out. After a long lecture and some stern words directed at me she loaded up the car with my step-dad, Bob, and they drove from St. Louis to Frisco, CO straight through. It wasn't the first time she had bailed me out of hot water and I'm pretty sure it wasn't the last. She did what good moms do. Protect her young. I can't thank her enough.

Recently I had to travel back home to Wood River Il. Circumstances beyond my control forced me to make a drive from Las Vegas to good ole Wood River. I had never made the drive down the long Highway 70. With a loaded Subaru and a lot of caffeine my girlfriend and I made the trip in about 30 hours. My schedule didn't permit me to get out and photograph much. I wanted to get a shot of my mom's house where I lived in her basement. I also rambled around and found a good "For Sale" shot. We didn't get to stay long and had to drive back almost fast as we came. I took the opportunity to use the Polaroid I brought to shoot a couple series through Kansas and
Colorado. The scenes of our country side were too beautiful to pass up. The Polaroids I'll scan one day but here are a couple of the shots I took with my digital.

It's funny how small a town Las Vegas can be. During my adventures of shooting cars in this city I have found that I see the same cars often. An original paint job on an old Lincoln was my prime example. A few weeks ago I went to the NHRA drag races and saw a really cool car I wanted to photograph. The drags bekoned and I put it in my memory banks for a later date. As luck would have it I saw the same car at the Viva car show a couple weeks after the drags. This time I had to stop and talk. I met Ray, a member of The Jokers Car Club. We talked for a few minutes about the cars and the club. I was dying to shoot these cars. But the situation of a car show makes it impossible to get any good shots. So I gave my card to Ray hoping to stay in touch. Luck would find me a second time. I was invited to a BBQ hosted by The Jokers. They brought some cars and Ray invited me to shoot. I had such a good time and I can't thank The Jokers enough for their hosipitality. I went to the drag races this weekend and found an American Treasure. He is the start man for the NHRA. I was told about this man before the race but the stories do no justice. At first glance you see the pride and joy that this man takes in his work. His face is weathered and dark from spending every weekend in the sun on the hot asphalt. His lean silhouette stalks the starting line looking for any imperfection on the track. He wants every driver to have a fair chance. He brings the race cars to the start line and stages them with an eager anticipation to see them run. Once the racers are staged he is in control of unleashing incredible amounts of horsepower with a mere flip of a switch in his hand. The cars rocket down the track as he watches with satifaction then turns to get the next racers ready. He loves his job. Every day. Every race.

First Friday!

So First Friday is right around the corner. For those of you that don't know the event it's a gathering of people to support the arts in Las Vegas. The first Friday of every month the galleries in the Art District open there doors and welcome in the public to view great work. The local streets around some of the galleries are shut down to make a street festival. I am going down there to hand out postcards and enjoy the night. I invite you all to do the same. Come down to Charleston and Main. If you see me ask for a card or if you see one give it to a friend. See you in the streets...

I was lucky to spend the day with some of Henderson's longboarders. We rode the hills of Boulder City near Lake Mead. The weather was beautiful and the hills were smooth. Miro came out and shot some too, his images coming soon. Thanks to the guys for letting me be a fly on the wall.

Hey there all. Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you all had a great New Years Eve. I had a wonderful night ice skating on a lake in Las Vegas, of all places. As I watched the fireworks above my head I had many thoughts in my head. One thought grabbed my attention it contained of the words of my guru Heather Protz, " You need to write more on your blog." So here I am starting a new resolution to write more in my blog this year. This first attempt is a funny misunderstanding that may have happened to someone down the road before.

So the funny misunderstanding goes like this. I recently had the oppertunity to work with a local Las Vegas Comercial Photographer on location in Dover Delaware, Manhatten New York, and a couple other east coast cities. It was an awesome experience that I was glad to be a part of. After the week of work out east I was thrown back into the world of school and finals prep time. By the time the semester was winding down I was running on bare fumes. One late night I checked my email to see a job offer for two days Location: NYNY. I was ecstatic thinking of going back to to the big city I only saw a few glimpses of. I instantly replied to the email confirming the job. The next thing I did was to tell with vigor all my family and friends I was going back to New York for more action in the east. I'm walking on air for a few days thinking I'm a jet setting assistant working on both coasts. In comes the funny arrow. I get a new email with a shooting schedule for the big NYNY shoot. My jaw drops open and I feel like the biggest tool in the world. I've misunderstood the original email. When I saw NYNY I instantly thought of the Big Apple. When I saw parking garage and casino the second email I realized that I, Las Vegas assistant, would be working in the New York New York Casino a mere five miles from my house . Let's just say I had a fun time explaining to everyone I had talked to that they hang out with a big dummy. Moral of the story is when you read your emails think about what city you live in because it might make a difference of how the note reads.
