I went to the drag races this weekend and found an American Treasure. He is the start man for the NHRA. I was told about this man before the race but the stories do no justice. At first glance you see the pride and joy that this man takes in his work. His face is weathered and dark from spending every weekend in the sun on the hot asphalt. His lean silhouette stalks the starting line looking for any imperfection on the track. He wants every driver to have a fair chance. He brings the race cars to the start line and stages them with an eager anticipation to see them run. Once the racers are staged he is in control of unleashing incredible amounts of horsepower with a mere flip of a switch in his hand. The cars rocket down the track as he watches with satifaction then turns to get the next racers ready. He loves his job. Every day. Every race.
